What happens to the video
Cropping changes the picture, so every frame is encoded again as H.264. The sound is copied as it is.
The video is read and cropped in this tab, and the new file is made in your browser’s memory and downloaded from there. Nothing is sent to a server.
Once the video is cropped
A cropped clip is often shortened next. Trim Video cuts it without encoding it again.

Why does it not work in Safari or on my iPhone?
Safari starts encoding the video and then stops part-way through, so the page does not offer the tool there. Every browser on an iPhone or iPad uses Safari’s engine, Chrome included. Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer or an Android phone crop correctly.
Is there a length or size limit, or a watermark?
No. The video is cropped on your own device, so there is nothing to pay for and no watermark is added. A long video takes a while — every frame is encoded again — and the page says roughly how long before you start, and warns if the new file is large enough to strain the browser’s memory.
Does cropping lower the quality?
Every frame is encoded again as H.264, which is what cropping needs, so some quality is lost, as with any crop. The size in pixels is exactly the rectangle you chose, rounded to an even number because the format needs one. The sound is copied as it is.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is read and cropped in this tab, and the new file is made in your browser’s memory and downloaded from there. Nothing is sent to a server.
