Video · trim

Cut a clip out of a video,
without compressing it again.

Choose where the clip starts and ends. The frames are copied into a new file as they are — nothing is re-encoded, so the clip looks exactly like the original, and the video never leaves your device.

What happens to the video

The frames are copied, not decoded and compressed again, so the clip is the same picture and the same sound as the original.

The video is read and cut in this tab. It is never uploaded.

Once the clip is saved

A short clip is often wanted as a GIF next. The GIF maker builds one from stills.

Questions

Why does the clip start a little later than I chose?

Because a video can only be cut without re-encoding at a key frame — a frame stored whole, which phones write every one or two seconds. In Nothing hidden mode the clip starts at the next key frame, and the page says by how many seconds before and after the cut. Exact frame starts where you chose instead.

What does Exact frame leave in the file?

The frames from the key frame before your start up to your start. Players hide them using the file’s edit list, but they are still in its bytes, and a tool that ignores the edit list will show them. If you are cutting something out that must be gone, use Nothing hidden.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is read and cut in this tab, and the new file is made in your browser’s memory and downloaded from there. Nothing is sent to a server.

Why is there a 1 GB limit?

Free trims take files up to 1 GB. Cutting needs memory of roughly three to five times the clip’s size, measured in desktop browsers, so the page also warns before a very large clip. Larger files are coming with Pro.
