what a gif does to a picture
A GIF has at most 256 colours in each frame. Flat graphics, screenshots and diagrams come through almost untouched; a photograph is dithered — its colours are mixed from the 256 it keeps — and a smooth sky shows it most.
The encoder is the one already inside this page’s image engine, so making a GIF downloads nothing extra, and nothing leaves your device.
No pictures yet. The first one you add decides the animation’s shape.

Stored as 500 ms — GIF keeps time in hundredths of a second.
Once the GIF is made
A GIF of photographs is large, because every frame is a whole picture in 256 colours. If one frame was the point, a compressed still is a fraction of the size.

Why does my photograph look grainy?
Because a GIF keeps at most 256 colours in each frame, and a photograph has far more. The encoder mixes the missing colours out of neighbouring pixels — dithering — which keeps a smooth sky smooth from a distance and grainy up close. Turning it off makes the file smaller and the sky banded. Flat graphics and screenshots are not affected.
Why is there a limit on frames?
Because the time it takes grows with every pixel. Measured in real browsers, one 500 × 500 frame took about 76 ms in Chrome and 157 ms in Firefox, so the page allows 16 million pixels in total — 64 frames at 500 × 500, or 25 at 800 × 800 — which is about ten seconds at the slow end. A narrower width allows more frames.
Why did my 125 ms delay become 130?
GIF stores time in hundredths of a second, so every delay is a whole number of ten milliseconds. The page shows the value the file will actually store before you build.
