gif frames

One animation in,
every frame out.

Drop an animated GIF and download each of its frames as a PNG, numbered in the order they play. Everything happens in this tab — the file is never uploaded.

Drop an animated GIF here

GIF. A still picture comes out as its one frame.

what a frame is here

Each frame comes out as the whole picture a viewer saw at that moment. A GIF often stores only the part of a frame that changed; those parts are drawn onto what came before, so no frame arrives as a fragment.

The frames are cut by the image engine already inside this page, so nothing extra is downloaded and nothing leaves your device.

Once the frames are out

Frames are usually taken out to be put back differently — fewer of them, another order, another speed. The GIF maker takes them in exactly as they came out.

Questions

Why is every frame a whole picture, when my GIF only changes a corner?

Because a GIF often stores only the part of a frame that changed, and shows it drawn over what came before. The frames here are what a viewer saw at each moment, so each one opens on its own. If you want the stored patches themselves, this page does not give them.

Why PNG and not JPEG?

Because a GIF frame has at most 256 colours and hard edges, and PNG keeps exactly those pixels. A JPEG would add blur and noise to a picture that had none, and would lose the transparent parts.

Why is there a limit?

Because every frame is decoded and encoded again as a PNG, and the time and memory grow with every pixel. The page reads the animation’s size before decoding anything and says how many frames fit at that size.
