A lighter GIF,
size before and after.

Drop an animated GIF, choose what it can spare and download a lighter copy. Everything happens in this tab — the file is never uploaded.

GIF.

what is kept

The size on screen and the loop are kept. If frames are dropped, each one’s time goes to the frame before it, so the animation lasts exactly as long — it plays less smoothly, not faster.

The GIF is encoded again by the image engine already inside this page, so nothing extra is downloaded and nothing leaves your device.

Once the GIF is compressed

Fewer pixels is the lever this page does not pull, and it is usually the biggest. Resizing keeps the shape and every frame’s timing.

Questions

Which setting shrinks a GIF the most?

It depends on the GIF, which is why the page shows the size before and after rather than promising a number. Fewer frames helps most when the animation is long; fewer colours helps photographs; the lossy setting helps when much of each frame stays still.

Does dropping frames make the animation faster?

No. Each dropped frame’s time is given to the frame kept before it, so the loop lasts exactly as long as it did. It plays less smoothly, not faster.

Why did my GIF come out larger?

Because it was already well compressed. Every frame is drawn whole and encoded again, and that can cost more than the original saved. The page says so, and the original is the one to keep.

Is my GIF uploaded?

No. It is decoded and encoded again in this tab by an image engine that is already part of the page. Nothing is sent to a server.
