format conversion

SVG to WebP

Of the three formats this tool writes, WebP is the only one that does not make you choose between a small file and a transparent background.

What actually changes

  • Lossy, and still transparent

PNG keeps transparency and is lossless; JPEG is lossy and has none. WebP is the only output here that is both, which is the whole reason it is worth a page.

  • The size comes from your file

The vector is rasterised at its own declared width and height. Nothing on this page or in the converter picks a size for it.

  • The same picture gives you the same file

Measured on one card at four different thread counts: WebP produced a byte-identical file all four times. AVIF, tested the same way, produced four different files with real pixel differences — which is one of the three reasons this tool does not offer it. In a browser that thread count comes from the machine, so this is the difference between a phone and a laptop handing you the same file or two different ones.

  • Read by every browser released since 2020

This is the practical difference from PNG for artwork on a web page: the same transparency, fewer bytes, and no fallback to arrange.

The short answer

The default answer for vector artwork going onto a web page. Keep the SVG for anything that will be drawn at a size you have not decided yet.

Convert it here

The converter takes your file, writes it as PNG, JPEG and WebP at the same pixel size, and shows you what each one weighs — measured on your file rather than on an average. It runs on the page using WebAssembly; the image never leaves your device.

The other conversions

Every pair this tool can actually do. There are nine because it reads four formats and writes three, and a format cannot be converted to itself.

This page carries 4 facts and a source for each one. It is one of nine, generated from the same list the converter reads — so a page cannot exist here for a format the file picker would refuse.
