PDF Page Numbers

A number on every page,
the right way up

Adds page numbers to a PDF. A page stored sideways is numbered along the bottom you see, a cropped page inside its crop, and the saved file is opened again to check every number is there before you get it.

PDF

The document is numbered in this tab. The file is not uploaded, and nothing about it is stored.

Once the pages are numbered

Numbering is usually the last change before a document is sent. If it should open only for the people you send it to, a password goes on next.

Questions

Where does the number go on a page that is turned sideways?

Along the bottom you see, reading left to right. Many PDFs store a landscape page as an upright one with an instruction to turn it, so the bottom of the stored page is the side of the page on your screen. The number is placed by the page as it is shown, and turned with it, so it reads the right way up wherever it is printed.

Do bookmarks and fillable forms survive?

Yes. The numbers are drawn onto the pages of your own document, which is then saved, rather than the pages being copied into a new one. Bookmarks and form fields live on the document, so they stay where they were.

How do I know every page got its number?

The page opens the numbered file again before it is saved and looks for each number, as the exact text, in the place it was drawn. If one is missing the file is not saved and the page says which pages failed.

Can I write the numbers in my own words or language?

Not yet. There are three formats, all in English, written in Helvetica, a font every PDF reader carries so nothing has to be embedded. That font has no Turkish, Greek or Chinese letters, so a format in another language needs an embedded font first.
