open graph checker

Somebody just shared
your page. What did they see?

Enter an address and this reads the tags a card is built from, measures the image rather than believing what the page says about it, and shows you the result. Edit any of it and take the tags away with you.

This tool works differently from the generator. The generator never uploads your image — it runs in your browser. The checker cannot: it fetches the public address you type, from our server, and reads that page’s HTML and the card image it points at — image files are fetched by our server rather than by your browser, so the picture can be shown back to you. Asking how a named crawler sees the page reads it a second time under that crawler’s user-agent, which the site’s own logs record as a second visit by somebody other than a browser. Only the address you enter is sent. The addresses you check are then kept in this browser, so it can tell you what changed since last time; they go nowhere, and you can clear them.

Questions

Why does asking how a crawler sees my page show up twice in my logs?

Because it is two visits. The page is read once the way a browser reads it, and again under the named crawler’s user-agent when you ask what that crawler is served — there is no other way to see it. Your own logs record the second as somebody other than a browser, and the page says so before you ask for it.

Who fetches the card image, my browser or your server?

Ours. The image is fetched on our server and carried back so it can be shown to you, which means the site hosting it sees a request from us rather than from you.
