platform set

App Store and Play Store asset sizes

Shipping to both stores means meeting two specifications that agree about almost nothing: Apple lists screenshot dimensions per display size and marks which are required, and Google Play sets bounds and aspect ratios rather than a list. Every number below is quoted, and where a platform publishes a rule instead of a size the rule is quoted as a rule.

The numbers, and where each one came from

  • iPhone screenshots

    Apple lists several accepted sizes per display class. 6.9-inch: 1320 × 2868, 1290 × 2796 or 1260 × 2736. 6.5-inch: 1284 × 2778 or 1242 × 2688. 6.3-inch: 1179 × 2556 or 1206 × 2622. 6.1-inch: 1170 × 2532, 1125 × 2436 or 1080 × 2340. 5.5-inch: 1242 × 2208. 4.7-inch: 750 × 1334. All portrait; landscape is the same pair transposed.

  • iPad screenshots

    13-inch: 2064 × 2752 or 2048 × 2732, and Apple marks this size required if the app runs on iPad. 12.9-inch: 2048 × 2732. 11-inch: 1488 × 2266, 1668 × 2420, 1668 × 2388 or 1640 × 2360. 10.5-inch: 1668 × 2224. Portrait; landscape transposed.

  • Play Store app icon

  • Play Store feature graphic

1024 × 500 px, JPEG or 24-bit PNG with no alpha.

  • Play Store phone screenshots

Google publishes bounds and a ratio rule rather than a size list: minimum dimension 320 px, maximum dimension 3840 px, and “the maximum dimension of your screenshot can’t be more than twice as long as the minimum dimension”. JPEG or 24-bit PNG with no alpha.

The short answer

Take one screenshot per device class at the largest size each platform accepts, then resize down — both platforms accept several sizes per class, and the largest is the only one that loses nothing on the way to the others.

What this page does not tell you

Every row above quotes a document we opened. These are the ones we could not write, and the difference between them is the point: a platform that publishes nothing is not the same as a platform whose page we could not read.

  • iOS app icon sizes

Not a gap in this page: Apple’s own documents publish one icon dimension and Xcode auto-generates the rest from a single 1024 × 1024 image. There is no ladder left to quote, which is why `ios-app-icon` is not a page here either.

  • Apple’s older iPhone and iPad display classes

Apple still lists 4-inch, 3.5-inch and 9.7-inch sizes, with and without a status bar. They are read and deliberately not printed: a page that lists every size a store has ever accepted stops being a thing somebody can act on, and the classes above cover every device currently sold.

  • Android XR screenshots

Google publishes an 8:5 ratio and a recommended 3840 × 2400, but the row is left out rather than printed: the recommendation is marked recommended and the minimum is separate, and nothing here has read enough of that page to say which applies when.

  • What either store does with a wrong size

Both documents publish dimensions; neither says what happens on upload if you miss them. Whether a listing is rejected, cropped or accepted was not read, so it is not claimed.

Make the files

The sizes on this page are the input. The tool below produces them, and nothing here is a step you have to do by hand.

The other set

Same rule, different platform.

This page carries 8 rows and every one of them names the document it came from and the date that document was read. Where a number was worked out here rather than quoted, it says so instead of borrowing somebody else’s citation. A row we could not source is listed above as unwritten rather than filled in from memory.
